Hot Potato Comedy Club - May 2018

Starring Special Guest MC Paul Pirie, Darren Harriott and Andy Askins

Paul Pirie takes the reins as hosts for May’s Hot Potato.  Paul began his stand-up career after giving up acting to pursue the funny man that lies within. This career change occurred at the same time he had to move back in with his Gran after giving the keys to his flat away in a pub quiz, we’ve all been there right? No, maybe not. But since then things have looked up for Paul, his unique, gun-style delivery, fizzing energy and surreal take on the world around him have made him a comedy circuit stalwart. He’s also had a consecutive succession of sell-out shows at The Glasgow Comedy Festival, looks like that career change is working out alright!

'A Frankie Boyle you could actually book…hilariously brutal' – Chortle

Andy Askins heads to the stage armed with a guitar and a cheeky grin. An overwhelmingly misleading demeanour heightens the impact of his killer lines. Expect a routine littered with an eclectic mix of offbeat original comic songs and parodies, popular songs re-written and given a perverse twist all with a wickedly dry sense of humour. Andy’s darker material is softened by his innocent and impish demeanour. Andy has worked with a number of household comedy names: Michael McIntyre, Lee Evans, Jason Manford, Micky Flanagan, Rhod Gilbert, Bill Bailey, Jack Dee…the list goes on!

‘One of my all-time favourites’ - Jason Manford

Former bouncer Darren Harriott is known for having a lot of opinions, on a lot of things. But it’s also common knowledge that he wouldn’t dream of touching on a topic unless he had a crisp line on it. Slick and extroverted - Darren masks much of his lesser mainstream, dark material with a highly likeable, charming demeanour. His comedy deals with everything from his drug dealing Rastafarian father to subverting stereotypes, to the juiciest of topics, religion – all with a cutting edge and a sharp punch-line.

‘Properly funny’ – The Times

He may be young but Jack Gleadow is taking on the comedy world by storm. The former International Young Magician winner has side-lined his wizardy to concentrate on stand-up - and it’s going pretty well! Last year alone he won the Amused Moose National New Comic Award, the Great Yorkshire Fringe new comedian of the year, he came second place in the 2017 Chortle Student Comedy Award and has been named Hull Comedian of the Year and Hilarity Bites New Comedian of the Year – definitely one to watch!

Line-ups are subject to change. Not for the easily offended.
