This magnificent Early English church, believed to be on the site of St Hilda's 7th century monastery, stands close to the sea on the Headland. From it there are views of the marina and over Tees Bay into North Yorkshire.Outstanding features of the church are the enormous buttresses, six bay nave, 7th century namestone, Brus Tomb and Norman door. The visitor centre is incorporated into the church building and includes audio-visual displays relating to the history of the church and the surrounding area.Internally the church's unique collection of religious artefacts, from a Saxon headstone to a De Brus tomb, all narrate a history of remarkable significance. There is also an audio tour of the building telling the compelling story of Abbess Hilda and the church. Refreshments are available, as is a range of souvenirs.
