The Museum of Hartlepool tells the story of a past which is packed with exciting and interesting people! As you enter, you are taken back 5000 years to the Bronze Age and introduced to the museum by Hartlepool's oldest known man.  From here, you move through centuries of the town's past, ending up with the unification of Hartlepool and West Hartlepool in 1967, and a look to today and the future. There are rooms available for private hire and education activities. Entry to the museum is free of charge.

  Getting to the Museum

  The museum is on the outskirts of Hartlepool Town Centre, alongside Jackson’s Dock. The museum is a 15 minute walk from Middleton Grange Shopping Centre. Hartlepool train station is an 8 minute walk from the museum, involving a slight incline on the bridge over the railway lines. A number of busses stop on Marina Way just outside the museum, these are Stagecoach Hartlepool 1 and 7, Stagecoach Teesside 36, Arriva Durham 23 and 24 and Go North East 55 and 55X Accessible parking There is a large car park alongside the museum with 8 accessible parking bays and a dropped kerb to the entrance of the museum.

  Entrances

  The entrance is signposted as the National Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool however this is also the entrance to the Museum of Hartlepool. After you go through the entrance doors turn right, then right again, the Museum is straight ahead. The main entrance has two sets of double doors. There is a push button on the left hand side of the outer doors and on the right hand side of the inner doors. The doors open towards you. The entrance to the museum has a set of manual double doors however they will be held open during opening hours. Immediately inside the entrance is the shop and reception desk for the National Museum of the Royal Navy.

  Getting around the site/ Lifts

  The museum is all on one level. Seating is available throughout the museum.

  Accessible toilets

  There is an accessible toilets within the reception area, close to the museum entrance. The facilities in the ground floor toilet include a baby change station. It is not RADAR key operated. There is no Changing Place facility within the museum however there is one in the museum carpark, close to Marina Way: • Marina Way, Jackson Dock, TS24 0XZ

  The museum does not currently offer relaxed openings Although the museum does not currently offer relaxed openings we have identified the following times when the museum is usually quieter with fewer visitors: 3-4pm in winter and 4-5pm in summer. This is not a dedicated relaxed session and we cannot guarantee the low level of visitors.

  There is not a café on site, however there are a number of places outside of the museum selling hot and cold drinks, snacks and meals. Picnics are not allowed on site, however the museum is alongside Hartlepool Marina with a number of seats available for picnics.
